My first web page, most likely my last
This activity to me was frustrating. I do not think I will be doing anything like this again any time soon. Though I thought it was cool to see how the computer works with its self to get the all the information and how it displays it. It just seemed pretty complicated to me when it did not need to be. Even after doing it, I feel like I do not really know what I did. Or how exactly it works. I know I basically used html code to set up the way a web page looks.

The Search Is On
A) Search Engine Used: Google
I believe this source is credible, above all I believe it because it is an EDU site. But this article is also a recent article which proves its timeliness, this article also contains a bunch of sources to help back its point, this also shows credibility.
2) Zhulei Tang, Yu (Jeffrey) Hu, Micheal D. Smith, Protecting Online Privacy: Self-Regulation, Madatory Standards, or Caveat Emptor, April 2005, 33pgs, http://infosecon.net/workshop/pdf/31.pdf
This article is a science article written by accredited people in their field. This article shows timeliness as well as a vast number of sources which back what it says.
3) USA.gov, Know the Risks, Reviewed last June 05, 2013, June 2013, http://www.usa.gov/topics/family/privacy-protection/online.shtml
This source is from this year. This is also a government website so we know that the information shared on it is credible information. This article also has good coverage and the information does work along side other information that I have found.
4) Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, Online Privacy: Using the Internet Safely, July 1995, Revised June 2013, June 2013, https://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs18-cyb.htm
This site has plenty of sources to back up the information. This site also has good coverage, it follows a lot of information that other sites have. This shows to me that this site is a pretty credible source.
I think that the .gov, .net and even the .edu were the best sources for the information that I am trying to get. I think this because they tend to have the most reliable sources for many reasons. They also tend to be easier to credit, and the information they provide is on the level that I need and want, A more professional/educated l level.
B ) Advanced Search, (online OR internet) AND privacy AND protection
C) 1) Santa Clara University, Privacy and the Law, June 2012, June 2013, http://www.scu.edu/ethics/practicing/focusareas/technology/internet/privacy/privacy-law.htmlI believe this source is credible, above all I believe it because it is an EDU site. The Right Tools
Search Tools
EXALEAD
Never heard of this. But I do not know of very many out there to be honest.
With this search engine you can search the web, images, videos, Wikipedia and more.
This engine has a few large logo-ed links at the bottom of the page that you can click, such as the labs one which I found interesting. When you search for something very little ads come up which I like. When searching a phrase such as hats or visors all things that contain one or both of these words come up. It also has a related searches area, I cannot seem to find any advanced search area though. Over all I liked this one, I think it might be just as useful as google in the beginning stages of research.
Metasearch Tools
Dogpile
I have never heard of this one either. This one has little tabs on the search engine with the following choices to search within; web, images, video, news, local, and white pages. This search engine has an advanced search as well as a preferences link. It appears that this search engine gets its results from google, yahoo and yandex. This search engine has an area at the left that suggests things that you may be looking for. In preferences you can change what kind of results you are looking for, more like a filtration system though then a more specific search. In the advanced search it has good ways to split up what you are looking for, this could be a good search engine to use when you are trying to find the bulk or middle section of your research.
Subject Directories
The WWW Virtual Library
Again I picked this one because I had never heard of it before. When you first arrive at this search site you are given lists of topics that you can choose from. After selecting the topic you want it brings you to some more choices for what it is that you want to know more about. Specific choices, once you have clicked one of those then it brings up a description of that thing. A history and origin, shows when it was last updated. and some related articles within the site that might also be helpful. I think this type of search would only be helpful if you were looking for something very particular.

To Search and See What We Find
Magazine:
Solove, Daniel J. "The End Of Privacy?." Scientific American 299.3 (2008): 100-106. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 May 2013.
I picked this magazine periodical first because I saw all of the subject terms and they all relate to my subject perfectly. I read the abstract and found that this article would really give my some good information about social networking and privacy. \
Research Article:
Hartzog, Woodrow, and Frederic Stutzman. "The Case For Online Obscurity." California Law Review 101.1 (2013): 1-49. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 May 2013.
I picked this article because it seemed a good choice with my topic. You can see that it is a research article because it contains information that is professional and is endorsed by professors of law. It looks like the article cuts a clearer picture of previous information.
Newspaper Article:
Vega, Tanzina. "A New Tool in Protecting Online Privacy." New York Times 13 Feb. 2012: 4. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 May 2013.
I picked this article because it seemed like it was an article about ways you can protect yourself online. This directly relates to my topic choice. I thought this would be a good choice.
Summary of Activity:
I used only one search statement which would be online OR internet and privacy and protect* I liked this activity but it was and is hard for me to explain why I picked them. Other then the obvious things, which was that they all related to my subject matter. I also liked that they were easy to find, once I searched for them. I really like EBSCO and have used it in the past in my 101 and 102 English classes and was very impressed with how helpful it really is. I was not disappointed this time as well, it gave me very good results and all the answers I needed to complete my assignment.

- Is this a Circulating Book or an E-Book?
Circulating
- Location and Call Number for the Book
Cannell Second Floor - Call number KF1263.C65 J38 2003
- What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy? (Remember the ASAP criteria from IRIS)
Aside from the fact that it is on the college website and we know that they only use credible sources. This in an a legal almanac.

Privacy and Internet
- Citation information for one book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date)
Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2010.
- Subject Headings (the field is called “Related Subjects” in Summit)
There are a few over there, law and legislation, a couple of court cases on privacy.
- Location and Call Number for the Book.
Cannell Second Floor - Call number KF390.5.C6 O344 2010
- What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy?
The book is printed by a university.
- How did this search differ from the search in the Cannell Library Book catalog?
This search went straight to more college printed articles, but overall they were both really helpful and both really easy to use.
It Pro
It pro is very user friendly, easy to use and understand. I like that you can really get down and filter out the things you don't need, or even make your list very focused on only the things that you do need. It has a general info choice, and with that a bunch more choices with that, which could be very useful in the beginning or a project. Or even if you are not sure what it is that you are looking for. You can look for only certain authors, or just publishers. This would definitely be a great site if you really know what information you are looking for.
Google Books:
- Search Term(s) used
Internet and Privacy
- Citation information for the book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date)
Kevin J. Connolly, Law of Internet Security and Privacy, Aspen Law & Buisness, 2004
- What clues does Google Books provide that lead you to believe this book is trustworthy?
The synopsis of the book states that it is from a legal stand point and that its a reliable guide. It is also published by a company called Law and Business.
What did I take from all of this: I think that all the research tools that I used here were very helpful. I prefer to use the library resources because I know that they are reliable resources They all have the basic beginning concept with the initial search, I even found the same book on a couple of the sites. For the sake of the assignment I did not just use the same book every time They are all very similar to each other. I like how easy they are to use, if anything was to change I would do that same as I always do and would need to adapt and get use to the new way. Like I said I like to use the computers at Clark. I think that It Pro is pretty nifty I have never seen that one before today, but very nice, easy to handle and convenient.

Sources
Practice Questions(Provide answers/sources for each of these):
1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
more plants in your diet is overall healthy. Vegatiarians tend to get more vitamins and fiber and fewer calorie and fat intake. It is hard to state whether this is due directly to not eating meat or not, because there are so many different types of vegetarians it is hard to study and confirm this. http://newsinhealth.nih.gov/issue/jul2012/feature1
2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
Well according to the definition of censorship yes this is. I do not think that they are in the wrong here, they have an image and want to uphold that. It is not as if they are forcing those bands to change the lyrics, they have a choice. If they want to be sold there though they need to follow their rules.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/censor?s=t
3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?
In my research I see that it can be as much as twice as much earnings in a lifetime. http://www9.georgetown.edu/grad/gppi/hpi/cew/pdfs/collegepayoff-summary.pdf pg2
4) Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?
No, because the services that are available are not very clear and need to be interepreted by a teacher I believe they should not be used. There is no clear cut yes or no, so in that case there could be an error and with that error cost a student their entire academic life.

5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global warming?
According to my source this will not have a great impact on the temperature of the earth.
http://phys.org/news/2012-01-decline-solar-output-offset-global.html
My Questions:
Is there a major difference between privacy in law to peoples everyday rights and what the media is aloud to exploit?
I think I would look up a government web site to find the laws on media free speech and then to peoples rights as far as personal information shared. There is also law encyclopedia data base on the library page, I might try that as well.
What is the best way to protect out privacy online?
I would most likely look this up online and look for a person who is known for giving this type of advice. This one I might also visit a computer specialist professor at Clark college and ask them for help. \
How do you handle a situation where you feel like your privacy has been breached?
I think first I might call up one of those free legal consultation lines and ask some questions, I may check the legal database as well, or look up laws to do with peoples rights to privacy.
I believe these would be the best sources because they all hold the most relevant information on the topic choice.
Thanks for reading.

Questions about Privacy/Summary
Is there a major difference between privacy in law to peoples everyday rights and what the media is aloud to exploit?
What is the best way to protect out privacy online?
How do you handle a situation where you feel like your privacy has been breached?
Using Gale Virtual Library and Wikipedia were different experiences. While Gales gave very informative papers with my topic word in each paper, Wiki contained a lot of general information. I liked that with gale you could find a lot of very specific information. If I was to do this again I would want to make a specific question or topic on privacy and gale would help with this the best. Both sources were easy to use and contain lots of information.
Privacy Wikipedia
Privacy: Person secluded from information sharing
Government, Privacy laws, constitutions, freedom of speech, identiy theft,
Advertising, security, clothing, trespassing, Civil, Fourth amendment, Interent privacy, medical privacy, political privacy, fraud
Wikipedia though has a lot similarities there are a bunch of different things came up as well.

Unit 2: Plagiarism
Read over each of the following passages, and respond on your own or as a class as to whether or not it uses citations accurately. If it doesn't, what would you do to improve the passage so it's properly cited?
1. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.
This person did cite the places correctly because all you need to do is capitalize the names of the places which was done.
2. Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.
If this is a direct quote it is not cited correctly. It would need quotation marks and then in parenthesis cited the name of the author in it right after the quote is finished.
3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.
This is presented as a fact, so the information source should be documented after stating the information. Do not quote the exact information unless you are going to use quotations.
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail":
You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.
4. Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a feigning type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.
This person did not plagiarize they got the same meaning across using there own words.
5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
I believe this person cited this correctly as well, they state the parts in parenthesis they took directly and then cited where they got those citations and where to find them.
6. In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."
This person did not cite correctly, though they state the document they get the quote from in their statement it is not cited correctly. The person needed to do as the following person did at the end with parenthesis.
7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.
I think that this is a different sort of citing, she gives credit in the beginning saying that it is her friends opinion and states her name, in something such as this the citing should be fine.
8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.
This is a hard one for me. To me this falls into the common knowledge area, therefor should require no more citation. Then again it may make the argument stronger if some statutes were quoted or referred too and then cited.
Finally I have had a nice re cap on plagiarism through the iris site. Some important things that always stick out in my head for starters is the rule that anything considered common knowledge does not need to be cited. It is also important to get the correct type of citation depending on the style format you are writing in. Referring to special books to help with those styles is great. You must always acknowledge statistics, charts, graphs and tables that others have made that you use. Saying all of that I plan to avoid plagiarism the biggest way by making sure that I put things into my own words. Other then that I will try to minimally use quotes for this will make it easier. I will also cite my sources when necessary.

My first Blog Post
Yey! My first blog post for class! :) Setting up my blog has been fun and pretty straight forward so far. I notice a big difference between digital work and paper. Digitally I believe it can go farther, and there is a possibility of of faster results. You can also portray digital information on a larger scale than anything written. There is a larger area of marginal error possible when using digital. But not anything that you could not help from happening with proper planning. I do not involve myself in too much social media. I do have a Facebook and I try to check it at least once a day. Some days I do not use it at all, and on great occasion I have been on it longer. It changes so much, and I am so busy that I do not really have enough time to get on all the time.
